Cinema is all about passion, risk, and artistic taste and letting your dreams control your vision and lead you to the stars.
Ron Howard got some great movies under his belt and Tom Hanks is one of my favorite actors of all time. A combination you can't miss when it comes to choosing a movie. Yes they had all the right ingredients to have a great movie, but honestly they really failed in what Angels and Demons succeeded. The pace of the movie was very slow you would almost fall asleep and the elasticity of the story as it's shown on the screen unneeded and made the film dull.
As usual Tom Hanks did a good job reprising the role for the third time as felicity jones who was great in her role as the antagonist. Directing wise Ron Howard was decent not like the great work he did on beautiful mind and other movies. So in a nutshell where the performers succeeded, the screenplay was made long and here comes the responsibility of the main producers Brian Grazer and Howard who should have taken executive decisions to shorten what seemed way too long. The movie was utterly disappointing, the screenplay of this version was weak and choices of the casting was in some roles below par, like the actor who played the villain is lame he strikes me as a follower for the bad guy. And choosing billy character to be Asian to honor Akira Kurosawa probably backfired. Apar from Chris Pratt who was good the rest of the cast was average at most. Also the deaths style of goodnight ,billy, and the big guy were extremely disastrous and unworthy of the magnificent seven name. All of the seven in addition to the villain had big shoes to fill and all except for Chris Pratt who owned the role failed miserably.
I always say and I will stay on my believes that U.S. Movies and especially Hollywood movies, in general, are having a flop in recent years critically I guess but not at the box office. Regardless of the failure of Hollywood movies to reserve a spot in classical movies recently, some movies were able to put themselves on the map of brilliance in films such as, little miss sunshine, Babel, lord of the rings trilogy, hotel Rwanda, downfall and many other movies that entered audience heart.
Ocean's thirteen might not be an original film and has been done before with legends like Sinatra, Sammy lee, and martin but still when I've watched the movie for the first time and I was telling myself before that I will regret ever watching it. The outcome was beyond my expectations which made it harder for me but I must confess it's one of the movies that I highly recommend and even I admit it can be watched more than once and you won't be bored. In addition, to what I have said already this movie gave Hollywood films a slim hope to regain the reputation they had in the 50s and late 60s. But still as a lover of European cinema and believer of artistic movies I see that this was an exception and the film industry in Hollywood and in the U.S., in general, have a long way to regain their golden era that was lost with the likes of Hitchcock and co. in the 50s and 60s. |
